James Miller / Professional Educator

James believes that every student deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. He offers personalized tutoring services tailored to the individual needs of each student. With over 20 years of experience as a professional educator, James can help students of all levels reach their academic goals.

James provides one-on-one and small group tutoring in a variety of subjects, from english & math to essay writing & SAT test preparation. Whether a student needs help improve their test taking abilities or is looking to get ahead, James can provide the assistance needed to succeed.

/ Education

1990-1994

Located in Washington, DC, Gonzaga is a Catholic all-boys high school, educating young men in the Jesuit tradition since 1821. James graduated in the spring of 1994.

1994-1998

The only Augustinian Catholic university in the nation, Villanova values a personalized experience where teachers and students are partners in learning. James graduated in the spring of 1998 with a Bachelors of Science in Education.

Present

James has been a high school English / Language Arts educator for 25 years in Prince George’s County. Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS), one of the nation's 20th largest school districts, has 201 schools and centers, more than 133,000 students and nearly 20,000 employees. 

/ Experience

Background & Training

  • Attended SAT Prep training during the summer of 1999
     

  • Worked for Kaplan Test Prep, Princeton Review, and Sylvan Learning Center teaching SAT Prep from 2000-2005
     

  • Began private test prep tutoring in 2006
     

  • Taught an SAT Prep class in Prince George’s County from 2000 through 2019
     

  • Currently teaches an SAT Prep class after school
     

  • Tutored hundreds of students from all over the area including:

    • Paul VI, Bishop O’Connell, and West Potomac in VA; 

    • Gonzaga, St. John’s, and St. Peter’s in DC

    • Bishop McNamara, South River, Broadneck, Annapolis Area Christian School, and St. Mary’s in MD

SAT / ACT
Tutoring Plan

  • Students review any previous scores by logging into their College Board account and reviewing the actual test questions and providing tips and strategies during the review
     

  • Students complete a full-length practice test from The Official SAT Study Guide
     

  • Students score and review tips and strategies after completing the practice test
     

  • All subsequent sessions include taking practice sections from the SAT book and working on recognizing test questions, applying strategies, developing skills, and practicing timing techniques
     

  • Students complete two additional full-length practice tests over the next 8 one-hour sessions
     

  • Most students complete 8 to 12 sessions prior to the PSAT or SAT, depending on the amount of time available
